Week 8/52

by Matt Stratton on February 25, 2009

I’m posting this late, but I did take the picture last week, so it totally counts!

Week 8/52

This photo was taken on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale. Surprise, surprise, I used the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 for this shot. I brought it into Photoshop and created two duplicate layers (for a total of three). I desaturated the middle layer, and then set the top layer to “hard light”. The top layer was set to 100% opacity, but the middle (desaturated) layer was 50%. I then merged the layers and applied noise (6% Gaussian).

Netchick sent me to visit you, Matt. I was just recently reading about how to make hyper-real photographs in a magazine and here you are showing off the technique. I love the affect that you show here, it works great on your face. I’d not want to use it in a self-portrait though. I’ve got a few more years on me than you do and this would make my wrinkles and such really show up.

Thanks! I do think that if you were to try to apply this technique and were concerned about accentuating wrinkles, some skin softening done first would help smooth that out before applying this technique. I’ll have to try that, actually.

Hey Matt… Great shot! I always find it interesting to hear about how the shot was composed and polished. Thanks for sharing it!

Great to have you playing the MEET n’ GREET!

I like the pic, but regret that I must ask… HUH?
You lost me Matt, but fear not, I was lost before I got here. ;)

Don’t sweat it, Grandy…the Photoshop folks understood the shorthand in my description. At least I think they did. To be honest, I’m pretty sure that up until about three years ago, I would have been a little lost myself. OK, maybe five years ago.
